Discussing dozens of films, Alan Nadel identifies narratives about credit, deregulation, gender, race, and masculinity that defined “President Reagan’s America.” The book provides hard-to-ignore demonstrations of the extensive synergy between politics, history, and pop culture. Example: English is a language, but we never encounter "English" apart from specific utterances. The real Hawthorne is conventional, sentimental, and longs to "open an intercourse with the world" as he claims in the preface to Twice Told Tales.

As a critic and academic, Peary is only competently mediocre at best and, frankly, it comes as no surprise that his first effort as a documentary director is marred by an over-abundance of talking heads (do we really need another sound-bite by the omnipresent endlessly-interviewed Roger Ebert?), clichéd narration based on paint-by-numbers pedagogy, irritating whining over the rise of internet criticism, cheesy production values, poor cinematography and lighting, and the general sense of an essay on film criticism in which logic has been split-haired by a muddled filmmaker who couldn't see beyond his editor's shoulders.

Some poets feel they must create new words and syntactic modes, for how else can they say new things? The critic speculates on why poetry, through its devices, is at such pains to dissociate itself from prose at all, and what it is trying to represent that cannot be represented by prose. And he sat with the servants and warmed himself at the fire. {55} Now the chief priests and all the council sought testimony against Jesus to put Him to death, but found none. {56} For many bore false witness against Him, but their testimonies did not agree. {57} Then some rose up and bore false witness against Him, saying, {58} "We heard Him say, 'I will destroy this temple made with hands, and within three days I will build another made without hands.'" {59} But not even then did their testimony agree. {60} And the high priest stood up in the midst and asked Jesus, saying, "Do You answer nothing?

It has been no less shaped by theological factors, especially those theological concerns and controversies that arose during the Protestant Reformation. Dante emphasizes poetry in his second book of On the Vulgar Tongue. James Joyce and the Act of Reception: Reading, Ireland, Modernism. Ironically, Vatke, in his later days, retracted his conclusions, undermining many theories that Wellhausen later published! [7] See H. Such rules are still applied in Theravada Buddhism, but married monks are found among Mahayana Buddhists.” You can spot Buddhist psycho-babble from quite a while off, there is a distinctive feel and look about Buddhist therapists and self-development.

David Daiches: “The poet can tell a story in narrative form and partly through the speeches of the characters (as Homer does), or it can all be done in third-person narrative, or the story can be presented dramatically, with no use of third person narrative at all.” 1.5.2 What is his definition of Tragedy? Herman Gunkel (1862-1932) developed a new approach to the Psalms which has exerted a considerable influence.

Even if moderate moralism is not the best way to explain the moral value of narrative artworks, Carroll is wise to turn to critical analysis of actual examples to support his argument, for this is where we can most clearly see the problems with moderate autonomism. He held that the orthodox conception of Christ was the creature of the ardent Messianic hopes of the Jewish-Christians of the primitive Church, who imagined that Jesus fulfilled the O.

I also think that theological interpretation is important, though it is a little bit more subjective. On the other hand, they refuse to go with the German rationalists in altogether denying their inspiration. They do not oppose the conclusions of Wellhausen and Kuenen because they are experts and scholars; they oppose them because the Biblical criticism of rationalists and unbelievers can be neither expert nor scientific. In fact such an "invention" would not be odd in the least.

The most obvious solution to the Synoptic Problem (order of priority among the New Testament Gospels) has been rejected by most scholars since the 19th century largely because of embarrassments it was causing for the church and/or their own theologies. In fact this might be the very thing they should do! How do characters from different classes interact or conflict? However, its results were not infallible and thus stood in need of “self-criticism for its own rectification, security and progress.” 23 It became a tool for granting assurance and certainty rather than a weapon to be feared.

The study of the Gospels as unified compositions carefully redacted (edited) by their authors to project distinctive theological views. The document is somewhat like a prisoner at the bar. The grounds are partly literary--the discrimination of documents, e.g. resting on differences of style and conception, duplicates, etc. (see PENTATEUCH)--but partly also historical, in accordance with the critic's conception of the development of religion and institutions in Israel.
