During our simulation, we assume that the processing delay of messages is negligible but take into consideration the delay due to queuing of messages in the transmission buffer.

A mobility pattern file defines the motion of the nodes in the network and the changes in the paths between the nodes over time. A program to generate the mobility pattern is also provided [3]. By default, this program assumes a fixed transmission range of 250 m to denote one hop. The initial positions of the nodes are designated at random and the move sequences are generated according to the random waypoint mobility model. Using an approach similar to Holland and Vaidya [9,10], we generate mobility patterns for the network of 20 nodes moving with a mean speed of 2 m/s for 1800 seconds and a pause time of 0 s.

For every graph in the mobile graph G , we compute the actual path from the source to the destination. To compute the MERIT ratio for the mobile graph G , the SMP algorithm requires the shortest path in each graph of the mobile graph and the shortest path in the intersection of all subsequences of the graph sequence. We implement Dijkstra’s shortest path algorithm to find the shortest hop path in any graph, while computing the cost matrix for the SMP algorithm. We use hop count as the metric for our implementation of the SMP because both DSR and AODV use this metric in their path computation.
